There is no doubt that Madrid is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities on earth, offering a charming atmosphere, fantastic food, and unique architecture to locals and tourists.
I visited this incredible city for the first time last weekend. Although it was the middle of February, right in the middle of the winter season, there was plenty of sunshine and hardly any rain. As a result, I could enjoy the bright and vibrant city and appreciate it at its best.
While visiting such a lively city, I knew I had to dress the part. I needed to be comfortable and stylish while exploring this world-class city. As an American in Paris, here are the dos and don'ts of what to wear on your weekend getaway to Madrid.
Layers are crucial to staying warm and comfortable during winters in Madrid. Winters in Madrid can be extra chilly due to the city's high altitude, so be sure to bring layers that will keep you bundled up while you explore the city. A thermal top, such as a warm sweater, is a great option to wear as a bottom layer. In addition, a cozy scarf is always a great idea to spice up your outfit while giving yourself a pop of color.
There is a wide variety of dress codes in Madrid, from bohemian to sophisticated. Some tend to dress in a smart manner with dress shirts, jackets, and expensive shoes. Most wear fur coats and costly scarves to complete a mature look. At the other end of the spectrum, a large proportion of the population has a more relaxed and bohemian style. Although they dress so differently, you will find these two groups experiencing the wonders of Madrid together in harmony. If you want somewhere to buy colorful bohemian clothes, check out El Rastro, Madrid's most extensive and oldest street market, which is open on Sundays.

There are hundreds of elegant and unique shops to choose from, and I had a fantastic time experimenting with countless styles during my visit. It was exciting to play around with a new style in an entirely new city, and it was an experience! While I had an amazing time this past weekend, I am happy to be reunited with my Parisian style!
