Milan is one of the chicest spots in Europe today, not only because many high-profile fashion houses have made the beautiful city their base but also because of the consistently well-dressed Milanese people. As an American who spent the weekend in Milan, here are some remarkable ideas on what you can pack and wear as you visit Milan without compromising your comfort or class.
The city has a crisp, buttoned-up, chic aura along with a unique flair. There is always a touch of color or something unusual that shows a person's original style. Milan represents a sort of “effortless fashion” that still includes an element of glamor, setting the city apart from the rest of the globe.
While Milan is a walking city, I suggest straying away from sneakers. Only two sneaker brands are worn in Milan, Superga and Hogan, but even those are never worn with visible socks. While we are on what NOT to wear in Milan, never think wearing shorts is a good idea, no matter how warm it is outside. If the weather is nice enough, pack a few floral sundresses and a pair of lightweight pants and blouses. Oh yeah, no backpacks or fanny packs, either.
Classy wool is a must-wear in Milan to keep you warm on those chilly days. A simple coat will suffice to keep you comfortable throughout your trip. I recommend opting for a faux-firm trim coat with a belt. Sweaters are a must, both light, and heavyweight. The color scheme of Khaki, black, gray, or maroon is perfect for blending in as a Milanese local as much as possible. Finally, remember to pack a scarf. Choosing one or two neutral colors that will match your outfits during your stay is best.

Most of Milan’s well-dressed residents embody the “Sciure aesthetic,” leaning more into smart-classic fashion, like subtle black, white, and neutral colors. Some everyday garments and accessories among Milan’s fashionable people are friulano shoes, Barbour jackets, and oversized blazers. Those who embody a classic Milanese style are decked in vintage furs, fine leather, croc-skin handbags, vibrantly printed scarves, and adventurous outerwear.
Milanese style is entirely glamorous, but you can still make it unique, and most importantly, your own! So feel free to explore Milanese style and enjoy the stunning city.
