Going Out in Paris!

It is no secret that Paris is big on nightlife! Every time Paris Fashion Week rolls around it almost seems as if it is a competition between the nightclubs to see which celebrities will be making an appearance at their establishment. Of course, with most clubs having hired photographers to document the night, they can turn around and post this content with celebrities, making their club even more popular. This of course makes it difficult for the average person to get in. However, having been here for a good amount of time already, I can confidently share the do's and don'ts of going out in Paris!
The main element of going out and participating in the Parisian nightlife is your outfit! When our friends studying abroad in other countries or even different French cities came to visit, they did not believe us when we said they needed to dress a specific way. At least not until they were denied entry. Even if you have a promoter, actually especially if you have a promoter, you are expected to look good. Look the part! This typically means an all-black outfit. Maybe a black top and a black skirt or an all-black dress with some knee-high black boots! They love black! I have been able to get away with wearing leather pants everywhere that I have been to, but it really depends on the night.
As soon as you approach the bouncers, you give them your best smile and say "bonsoir." Now as soon as you give them your ID they are going to know whether or not you are actually French, but it is all about the formality of it all and is a nice sign of respect. Some clubs are very biased towards French people and would rather let them in over any foreigner so this one little thing can either make or break you.
Once you are in you will be checking your coat, even if it completes your outfit, they will urge you to take it off. So make sure you have euros on you! It is typically only 2 or 3 euros per jacket, and as you dance the night away you will be eternally grateful for having had taken it off!
Then you just have fun!
