Chanel. French luxury since 1910. The creation of the "little black dress," their Chanel No. 5 perfume, and elegant tweed designs. These characteristics are how most would recall Coco Chanel's legacy. Although, Chanel's history spills into more infamous history as well: World War II.
Coco Chanel certainly made a name for herself quickly in the fashion world. Although, her name has been tainted by her involvement with German military officers during the German occupation of France in World War II.

In exchange for her nephew's safety, Chanel agreed to cooperate and conspire as a spy with the German Nazis. She traveled to Madrid and Berlin in the name of the business and obtained valuable political information from her colleagues. Then, she reported back to Nazi Germany.
The well-known fashion designer was caught in her involvement as a Nazi spy in 1944. Although, she was absolved from any punishment. She was taken to French court during the end of the war but denied any involvement with the German officers she was working with, outside of the negotiation to release her nephew from prison.
Overall, Chanel's name has remained strong as the backbone of her brand. Although, there has been some recent controversy as the past of Coco Chanel becomes rediscovered and talked about. We must ask ourselves: how much should we hold a brand accountable for its founder's actions?
